Keeping the streets of Brighton clean from gum...

Brighton and Hove Council work very hard to ensure that the streets of Brighton are kept as clean as possible. A big part of this is the removal of chewing gum. Over £400 a day is spent by the council to clean chewing gum from the city's pavements. Over 2 million pieces of gum are cleaned from Brighton pavements each year.

Five interesting facts about chewing gum chewing gum

  • Over 9,000 tonnes of chewing gum a year – or 1,000 million packs – are bought by 20 million people in Britain every year
  • About 80% of this chewing gum is simply discarded in public places
  • Some of this gum attaches itself to pedestrians but most just sticks to pavements including those in Brighton & Hove
  • Chewing gum takes up to five years to degrade, and it can be removed only with specifically designed equipment
  • It is thought to cost around 3p per piece to manufacture but around 10p per piece to clean off the streets in Brighton

A Brighton councillor said: "I'm declaring war on the dreadful blight of chewing gum discarded on our city's streets. I want visitors to Brighton & Hove to be greeted by clean pavements, not by the unpleasant sight of sticky gum stains. Brighton residents and visitors need to help by placing chewing gum in a bin rather than throwing it on the floor."

It is not only the public areas of Brighton and Hove that suffer from discarded chewing gum. Local shopping centres, sports clubs and business forecourts can also have the same problem.
